Place your prayers, dreams and goals in an out-of-this-world DIY decoration
A journal is a great place to write your goals, dreams and aspirations. But perhaps they deserve a special place where you can reach for them when you need a reminder of what God has placed on your heart. Write a special message of inspiration, jot down a goal or remind yourself of the progress you’ve made on each individual strip of paper. Fold the paper to form a star and place it in the jar. When you need a reminder of God’s love, pick a star and read what you wrote. Fold it back up, place it in the jar again so you can come back to it later when you need another pick-me-up.
For this DIY, you will need:
- Clear mason or candy jar (if you want, you can even use an empty jar from your pantry at home),
- Spool of ribbon in whichever color you like most,
- 8.5 x 11” lightweight construction or origami paper in your favorite color (it should be very easy paper to fold!),
- Stickers or other embellishments if desired,
- Reliable fine-tipped pen.
Cut the colored construction paper into long strips that are no more than an inch wide. Any wider, and your stars may not come out quite right. You can cut thinner strips to create some size variation. Use as many colors as you would like!
Transform these long strips of paper into inspirational origami stars! Gently tie your paper strip into a knot on one half of the strip. This should leave a short tail on one side of the knot, and a long tail on the other side.
Tuck the short tail into the little pocket inside of the knot you just made so that you create a pentagon shape. (Don’t press down too hard on the knot or the star won’t pop up – this will be a key step later!)
Next, use your fine-tipped pen to write inspirational quotes, goals and aspirations on the long strip of paper remaining!
Now, wrap the long tail around the pentagon shape. The written side should no longer be visible.
When you reach the end of the long tail, tuck whatever is left over into the pocket you’ve created by wrapping the pentagon. Feel free to trim the tail a little if it’s too long to fit into the pocket.
To finish origami star, gently press your fingers on the sides of the star until it pops out. Continue doing this until all five sides of your pentagon have been indented. At this point, you should have made a cute five-pointed star!
Once you finish your inspirational stars, mix them together and fill your jar.
Finally, cut off a piece of ribbon and tie it below where your jar lid screws on. You can add stickers, rhinestones, fake flowers or lace to your jar to customize it if you desire!
You’ve created a tasteful room decoration that is both beautiful and therapeutic! Now when you’re having a hard day and you feel like the world is against you, take a little star from your jar and read the words you’ve written. May these inspirational stars remind you that things will become better no matter how dark circumstances might seem, and all of your dreams can come true if you only reach for the stars!
